About the Rodeo

The Mareeba Rodeo is one of the premier rodeo events in North Queensland, drawing competitors and spectators from across the region. Held annually in July at the Mareeba Rodeo Grounds on Rankin Street, it showcases the region's deep connection to cattle country and rural traditions.

The event features professional rodeo competition under floodlights, with bull riding as the headline event. The atmosphere combines serious rodeo competition with a community festival - live music, food stalls, bar facilities, and entertainment for all ages.

Rodeo Events

Bull Riding

The main event - riders must stay on a bucking bull for 8 seconds. High-adrenaline action under floodlights.

Saddle Bronc

Classic rodeo event where cowboys ride bucking horses using a saddle. Style and control are judged.

Bareback Bronc

Similar to saddle bronc but without a saddle - just a rigging handle. Extremely physical.

Team Roping

Two-rider team works together to rope a steer. One catches the head, the other the heels.

Steer Wrestling

Also called bulldogging - rider leaps from horse to wrestle a steer to the ground against the clock.

Barrel Racing

Fast-paced timed event where riders navigate a cloverleaf pattern around barrels. Popular women's event.

Junior Rodeo

Events for younger competitors including poddy riding, junior barrel racing, and junior events.
