Kennedy Highway (State Route 1)
The Kennedy Highway is the main arterial road connecting Mareeba to Cairns (64km east) and inland to Mount Garnet, Innisfail, and beyond. This critical highway carries significant freight and tourist traffic and is generally maintained to a high standard as a state-controlled road.
Typical Conditions
- ✓Dry Season (April-November): Generally excellent conditions with sealed surface throughout. Minimal delays expected.
- ⚠Wet Season (December-March): Watch for water over road after heavy rain, particularly in low-lying sections west of Mareeba. Surface water can appear suddenly.
- ✕Flooding: During extreme weather events, sections between Mareeba and Mount Garnet can flood, cutting the western route. Check conditions before travel.
Current Roadworks
Queensland Department of Transport and Main Roads regularly conducts maintenance and upgrade works on the Kennedy Highway. Common works include:
- Pavement resealing and line marking (typically dry season)
- Bridge maintenance (Tinaroo Creek, Davies Creek crossings)
- Shoulder widening and safety improvements
- Vegetation clearing for sight distance improvements
Check QLD Traffic for current roadworks and delays.
Kuranda Range Road
The Kuranda Range Road (Kennedy Highway east of Mareeba) is a winding mountain road that descends 350 metres over 14 kilometres from the Atherton Tablelands plateau to Smithfield (Cairns northern suburbs). This scenic route requires careful driving and is subject to regular maintenance closures.
Common Night Closures
The Kuranda Range is frequently closed overnight for maintenance works, particularly during dry season.Typical closure times are 7:00 PM to 5:00 AM, with detours via Gillies Highway (Atherton) or delays of 1-2 hours.
These closures are usually scheduled weeks in advance for pavement works, rock scaling, line marking, and safety barrier installation. Always check before evening or early morning travel.
Driving Tips for Kuranda Range
- •Steep & winding: Use low gears when descending. Check your brakes before starting descent.
- •Overtaking: Very limited overtaking opportunities. Do not cross double white lines. Be patient with slower vehicles.
- •Fog: Common in early morning, especially winter months. Use headlights and reduce speed.
- •Wildlife: Watch for wildlife, particularly cassowaries and wallabies, especially dawn and dusk.
- •Rain: Surface becomes slippery when wet. Reduce speed and increase following distance.
Alternative Routes to Cairns
If Kuranda Range is closed or conditions are poor:
- Gillies Highway via Atherton: Add 45 minutes. Take Kennedy Highway west to Atherton, then Gillies Highway east to Gordonvale, then Bruce Highway north to Cairns. Scenic rainforest drive.
- Palmerston Highway via Innisfail: Add 90 minutes. Longer route via Millaa Millaa and Innisfail, suitable for caravans and heavy vehicles. Australia's wettest road – stunning waterfalls.
Wet Season Closures (December-March)
The wet season brings monsoonal rain, with Mareeba receiving the majority of its 876mm annual rainfall between December and March. Heavy rain can cause flash flooding, road inundation, and closures across the shire.
| Road/Area | Common Issues | What to Expect |
|---|---|---|
| Kennedy Highway (west) | Water over road, flooding at low-lying creek crossings | Can close for hours to days after heavy rain. Check before travel to Mount Garnet. |
| Dimbulah area roads | Local flooding from Walsh River and tributaries | Low-level bridges and causeways can flood. Avoid unnecessary travel during heavy rain. |
| Peninsula Developmental Road | Extensive flooding, unsealed sections impassable | Often closed Jan-March. 4WD essential even when open. Not recommended for caravans wet season. |
| Mt Molloy-Daintree Road | Creek crossings flood, gravel sections wash out | Check Daintree River ferry status. Road can close after heavy rain. |
| Chillagoe Road | Flooding at creek crossings, washouts | Generally good but can close temporarily. Check conditions before travel. |
| Mareeba town streets | Flash flooding in low-lying areas after intense rain | Barron River precinct and areas near Granite Creek can flood. Never drive through floodwater. |
Never Drive Through Floodwater
If it's flooded, forget it. Just 15cm of fast-flowing water can wash away a vehicle. Floodwater can also hide road damage, debris, and submerged hazards.
Penalties for driving through road closed signs or around road closure barriers include fines up to $3,135 and if you need rescue, you may be charged the full cost of the rescue operation.
Gravel & Unsealed Roads
Mareeba Shire has an extensive network of gravel and unsealed roads, particularly in rural and remote areas. These roads service farms, grazing properties, and remote communities. Conditions vary dramatically by season and maintenance schedule.
Dry Season Conditions
(April-November)
- ✓Generally firm and trafficable
- ✓2WD vehicles can access most gravel roads with care
- ⚠Corrugations develop on frequently used roads
- ⚠Dust can be extreme – use headlights and reduce speed
- ⚠Loose gravel and potholes present on some roads
Wet Season Conditions
(December-March)
- ✕Many roads become impassable after rain
- ✕Black soil becomes extremely slippery and boggy
- ✕Creek crossings flood, cutting access for days
- ⚠Even 4WD vehicles can become bogged
- ⚠Road surface damage, washouts, and deep ruts common
Tips for Gravel Road Driving
- Reduce speed – gravel roads require longer stopping distances
- Avoid sudden steering or braking which can cause skids
- Watch for oncoming vehicles and move to the left safely to reduce dust and stone damage
- Check your vehicle insurance covers gravel road damage (many comprehensive policies exclude unsealed roads)
- Carry a spare tyre, jack, and basic tools. Mobile phone coverage is limited in remote areas
- Tell someone your route and expected arrival time when traveling remote roads
- Don't travel gravel roads at night unless essential – wildlife and road hazards are very difficult to see
